How to Grow a Giant Beetroot:
- Choose the Right Variety: You’ve found them now
- Planting Time: Start planting beetroot seeds in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Beetroots thrive in cool weather, ideally between 50–75°F (10–24°C).
- Soil Preparation: Beetroots prefer well-drained, loose, and fertile soil. Add compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil. Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).
- Planting Seeds: Sow beetroot seeds 1 inch deep and 2–4 inches apart. If growing giant beets, space them at least 4 feet apart to allow room for growth.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Deep watering is important for root development, especially as the beets grow larger.
- Feeding: Use a balanced fertilizer or one high in potassium and phosphorus. Too much nitrogen can lead to more foliage and less root growth.
- Weeding and Mulching: Keep weeds under control to prevent competition for nutrients. Mulch around the plants to conserve moisture and reduce weed growth.
