Description

This strain has grown the UK Record 124lb cabbage. It needs around 6ft space and should be sown from November to January if aiming to enter the giant vegetable shows in September and October. These will still be capable of reaching large sizes if grown after these dates.

How to Grow a Giant Cabbage:

  1. Choose the Right Variety: This is perfect
  2. Planting Time: Start cabbage seeds indoors between January to May. Cabbages are cool-weather crops, so they grow best when the soil temperature is between 45–75°F (7–24°C). Transplant seedlings indoors and keep potting up. Plant out after the risk of frost has passed.
  3. Soil Preparation: Cabbages need rich, well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter. Work in compost or well-rotted manure before planting. Cabbages prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0.
  4. Space to Grow: For giant cabbage heads, space plants at least 36 to 48 inches apart in rows 36 inches apart. The more space you give them, the larger they can grow. They need plenty of room for their roots and dense heads.
  5. Watering: Cabbages require consistent moisture, especially during the growing season. Water deeply to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  6. Feeding: Cabbages are heavy feeders and benefit from a balanced fertilizer. Use a high-nitrogen fertilizer to encourage leafy growth, especially early in the season. As the cabbage heads begin to form, switch to a fertilizer higher in potassium and phosphorus to encourage strong head development.
  7. Weeding and Mulching: Keep weeds under control by mulching around your cabbage plants. Mulch will help retain moisture and suppress weeds, giving your cabbage the best chance to grow large.
  8. Pest and Disease Control: Cabbages are prone to pests like aphids, cabbage root fly, and flea beetles. Use organic pest control methods such as neem oil, row covers, or handpicking pests. Cabbages are also susceptible to diseases like downy mildew, so be sure to monitor for any signs of trouble and remove affected leaves.
  9. Supporting the Heads: If the cabbage starts to grow large, you can support the heads with a little extra care—tie the outer leaves together or use stakes to prevent them from falling over under their own weight.
  10. Harvesting: Cabbages are ready to harvest when the heads are firm and solid to the touch. Use a sharp knife to cut the cabbage from the base of the stem. If you’re growing giant cabbages, you may need to wait longer for the heads to reach their full size.

By providing rich soil, consistent care, and plenty of space, you can grow impressive, giant cabbages that will be the talk of your garden!
